Fast EU shipping from our Netherlands warehouse.

Why Upgrade to a Racing Transmission?

Stock automatic transmissions were never designed to handle the torque, shock loads, and sustained RPM of modern performance engines. A factory Turbo 350 or 700R4 might survive behind a mild small block, but bolt on a blower, hit it with nitrous, or raise the stall speed past 3,500 RPM and you are living on borrowed time. A dedicated racing transmission is engineered from the case outward to survive forces that would grenade OEM hardware.

The difference starts with the case. Aftermarket SuperCases and SFI-certified bellhousings resist the flex and distortion that cracks factory castings under tire shake and hard launches. Inside, straight-cut 9310 alloy gears replace helical factory gears โ€” eliminating the axial thrust loads that are the primary failure mode in high-HP builds. Multi-clutch drums with 8, 10, or even 12 friction surfaces handle torque that would slip a stock 4-clutch assembly. And ringless input shafts, 4340 chromoly output shafts, and billet planetary carriers transform the transmission from a liability into a weapon. ๎Ž cite๐Ÿ› web_search:47#9:~:text>Aftermarket straight-cut gears are much stronger and an important change when building a racing transmission. From the factory, these transmissions came with helical gears. With straight cut gears, the teeth mesh fully, whereas with helical gears, only the tips of the teeth mesh, creating a weak point๎Žจ

Perhaps most importantly, a proper racing transmission includes safety features that OEM units lack. SFI 4.1 transmission blankets, SFI 30.1 bellhousings, and scatter shields are mandatory at most tracks for good reason โ€” when a 1,800 HP transmission fails at 7,000 RPM, containment saves lives.

Racing Transmissions We Stock

Powerglide Racing Transmissions

The king of drag racing. The GM Powerglide has not been produced since the early 1970s, yet it remains the dominant transmission in doorslammer, Pro Mod, and radial tire racing thanks to its simplicity, light weight, and incredible strength-to-weight ratio. Two gears mean one shift per pass โ€” less complexity, less weight, and fewer opportunities for failure. We stock ATI High Impact and SuperCase Powerglides rated to 1,800+ HP, TCI Pro-X units, and Hughes Performance bulletproof builds. Available with 1.76, 1.80, or 1.98 first gear ratios and full-manual or transbrake valve bodies. ๎Ž cite๐Ÿ› web_search:47#9:~:text>For the all-out drag racer, two of the most historically prevalent automatic transmissions have been the GM Powerglide and the three-speed Turbo 400๎Žจ

Turbo 400 (TH400) Racing Transmissions

The three-speed tank. The TH400’s heavier construction and three forward gears make it the choice for heavy street cars, door cars, trucks, and off-road builds where the Powerglide’s two-speed layout is not ideal. We stock ATI, TCI, and Hughes TH400s with manual valve bodies, transbrakes, and straight-cut gear sets. Rated to 1,200โ€“1,800 HP depending on configuration. The TH400’s extra gear and robust planetary gearset make it more versatile for street-driven builds that still see track duty.

Turbo 350 (TH350) Racing Transmissions

The lightweight alternative. For smaller displacement builds, street-strip cars under 3,500 lbs, and budget-conscious racers, the TH350 offers Powerglide-like weight with three-speed versatility. We stock performance-built TH350s with hardened input shafts, shift kits, and high-stall converter compatibility.

4L80E Racing Transmissions

Overdrive for the street strip. The 4L80E brings electronic overdrive to high-HP builds, making it the go-to for Pro Touring cars, highway cruisers, and street machines that need 70 MPH highway manners without sacrificing launch capability. We stock performance-built 4L80Es with upgraded planetary sets, billet input shafts, and standalone controller compatibility.

Transbrake Transmissions

Essential for consistent launches. A transbrake locks the transmission in first gear and reverse simultaneously, allowing the engine to build RPM against the converter without moving the car. Release the button and the car launches instantly. Available in Powerglide, TH400, and TH350 configurations from ATI, TCI, and Hughes.

Full-Manual Valve Body Transmissions

Driver-controlled shifting. Full-manual transmissions eliminate automatic shifting entirely โ€” the driver selects every gear change via the shifter. This provides maximum control, eliminates missed shifts, and reduces internal heat by removing the governor and modulator circuits. Popular in bracket racing, no-prep, and street-strip builds.

Torque Converters

The critical interface between engine and transmission. We stock bolt-together and welded converters from ATI, TCI, Hughes, and Coan in stall speeds from 2,500 to 6,000+ RPM. Bolt-together designs allow trackside stall speed changes without removing the transmission โ€” a game-changer for dial-in racers. ๎Ž cite๐Ÿ› web_search:47#9:~:text>A very popular trend in drag racing is the bolt-together torque converter, allowing racers to make minor adjustments in stall speed and in effect tune the converter right at the track๎Žจ

Transmission Components & Rebuild Kits

Gear sets, input shafts, output shafts, planetary carriers, clutch drums, valve bodies, pumps, and complete rebuild kits for Powerglide, TH400, TH350, and 4L80E transmissions. Build your own bulletproof unit or refresh a tired race box between seasons.

How to Choose the Right Racing Transmission

Selecting the correct racing transmission for your build requires matching several variables to your power level, vehicle weight, and intended use:

Power Level: This is the starting point. A 500 HP street car does not need the same transmission as a 1,500 HP Pro Mod. Be honest about your power goals โ€” and plan for future upgrades. It is always cheaper to buy a transmission rated for 300 HP more than you currently make than to rebuild a blown unit later.

Vehicle Weight: Heavy cars need more torque capacity than light cars at the same power level. A 3,800 lb door car with 800 HP stresses a transmission more than a 2,600 lb dragster with the same engine. The TH400’s extra gear and heavier construction often makes it the better choice for vehicles over 3,500 lbs.

First Gear Ratio: Powerglides offer 1.76, 1.80, and 1.98 first gears. Lower numerically (1.76) provides less torque multiplication but lower RPM drop on the shift โ€” ideal for high-RPM, high-stall combinations. Higher numerically (1.98) provides more launch torque for heavy cars and lower-stall converters. The 1.80 is the most popular all-around choice.

Transbrake vs. Full Manual: Transbrakes are mandatory for consistent bracket racing and Pro Mod launches. Full-manual transmissions are preferred by some street-strip builders who want total control. Some transmissions can be configured with both โ€” a transbrake for staging and a full-manual valve body for shifting.

Converter Selection: The transmission and converter must be matched as a system. A 1,800 HP transmission behind a mismatched converter will still fail. Stall speed, fin angle, stator design, and bolt-together capability all factor into converter selection. We recommend consulting our technical team or the transmission manufacturer directly for converter recommendations.

Safety Requirements: Most tracks require SFI 4.1 transmission blankets for transmissions in cars running faster than 10.99 seconds or making over 1,000 HP. SFI 30.1 bellhousings are mandatory in many classes. Do not skip safety equipment โ€” it is not optional.

Safety & SFI Requirements for Racing Transmissions

High-HP transmissions are potential grenades. Proper safety equipment is not optional โ€” it is mandatory at virtually every track and a critical investment in your own safety.

SFI 4.1 Transmission Blanket: A ballistic blanket wrapped around the transmission case that contains explosion and fragmentation in the event of a catastrophic failure. Mandatory at NHRA, IHRA, and most outlaw events for transmissions over 1,000 HP or cars running quicker than 10.99 seconds.

SFI 30.1 Bellhousing: A containment bellhousing that prevents clutch and flexplate explosions from penetrating the floorboard or transmission tunnel. Mandatory in many classes and strongly recommended for any high-HP manual or automatic transmission.

SFI 29.1 Flexplate: A certified flexplate designed to resist the centrifugal forces of high-RPM operation. Stock flexplates can explode at high RPM, sending shrapnel through the floorboard.

Scatter Shield: Additional containment for manual transmissions and clutch assemblies. Some automatic builds also benefit from scatter shields depending on class rules.
